In today world, post-modernism art movement is widely used in movies. Post-modernism art movement is contradicted to some aspects of modernism. Movies that consist prediction of the future, the usage of modern technology and the usage of multimedia all are related to post-modernism art movement. The movie I had chosen is Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a 2001 American animated action-adventure film. The movie started off with the saying “… in a single day and night of misfortune, the island of Atlantis disappeared into the depths of the sea.” – Plato, 360 B.C. The entire island of Atlantis was brought down by big waves beneath the bottom of the ocean. One of the royal blood members was sacrificed and taken by the Heart of Atlantis with is a powerful crystal protecting the island and the villagers. The victim was Princess Kida’s mother. In 1914, a young man named Milo Thatch, the grandson of the man named Thaddeus Thatch. Milo works in the boiler room of a museum. Milo himself is a cartographer and linguist and is researching on the Atlantis which was always told by his grandfather. He believes that when he has found the Shepherd’s Journal, a book which can bring him to the lost island. But the museum board refuses to accept his proposal and funding him on the search for the journal and mysterious island. The museum board thinks he is out of his mind. That evening after work, Milo went back to his apartment to find a woman named Helga Sinclair. Helga brought him to meet Preston B. Whitmore, a millionaire as well as a good friend of Milo’s grandfather that was never mentioned to Milo by his grandfather. As promised made with Milo’s grandfather, Whitmore passed the Shepherd’s Journal to Milo and funded him in search of the lost island Atlantis. Commander Lyle Rourke the person who led the recovery expedition of the Shepherd’s Journal is going to once again lead the expedition. The crew consists of Vinny Santorini, a demolitions expert; Mole Moliere, a geologist; Doctor Joshua Sweet, a medical officer; Audrey Ramirez, a mechanic; Mrs Wilhelmina Pckard, a radio operator; and Cookie Farnsworth, a mess cook. They travelled in a massive submarine named Ulysses. The Ulysses submarine was destroyed by a robotic lobster-like creature named Leviathan which was guarding the entrance to the lost island Atlantis. Luckily, Milo and the crew survived the attack and were in an underground cavern. Milo continued to lead the way, after encountering some creatures and a great fall they finally made it to the boarder of the lost island Atlantis. They were then greeted by Princess Kida and a few natives. Milo spoke their language and soon discovered that the natives knew a lot more languages. Kida brought Milo to see her father, the King of Atlantis. Kida believed that Milo’s appearance would help Atlantis to change and become a better place but to her disappointment, the King disagree with her and ordered Milo and the crew to leave immediately. Milo explained to Rourke that the King might be hiding something from them but little did Milo know that Rourke was just using him to do his dirty work. After Kida shown Milo the ruins sunken under the island, Rourke and the crew were ready with guns and were questioning where the crystal was. After hurting the King and sitting on the throne, Rourke found the secret passage to the crystal. The crystal called upon Kida as the next victim to protect the island. Rourke locked the Kida in a metal box and before Rourke and the crew went with Kida the crew suddenly was convinced by Milo and stayed behind leaving Rourke and Helga. Milo went back to check on the King’s condition and Doctor Sweet said he was in bad condition. The King gave Milo his crystal and ordered him to save Kida his only daughter left and save the island. Milo understood that the crystal was the only life force provided to the island and the people. Milo was not ready and was hesitating but after Doctor Sweet encouraged him, Milo was determined to save Kida and the island. After fighting with Rourke with the help of the machines that Kida showed him, the natives and the crew, Milo successfully saved the Kida and the island. The crew was awarded treasures and as for Milo, he chose to stay behind and help Kida in restoring her island. Back at Whitmore’s place, Whitmore made the crew promise that the adventure to the lost island Atlantis was kept a secret.

This Disney movie had a few interesting points. One of them is that Mrs Wilhelmina Pckard the radio operator was one of the last Disney movies to have a character that smokes. Other than that, the movie was one of the movies to take place in the actual year 1914. As for the designing of the island Atlantis, the producers avoided the concept as the crumbled Greek columns underwater but instead they used the forms of architecture such as South-east Asian and Mayan works. The main character Milo Thatch was the first Disney male hero to wear glasses.

In my opinion to this movie, the keyword I had given to the movie is BELIEVE. Why you may ask, in my opinion, everything we do start with the word believe. We believe that we could do things thus we go do it. In the movie, Milo believed what his grandfather had thought him about the lost island Atlantis. He studied the language, hoping one day he gets to discover the beliefs in his grandfather. Whitmore believed in Milo to search for the lost island Atlantis and funded him. Kida believed in Milo could change the current living style of the island and lead Milo to the ruins sunken under the island. Rourke only believed in the value of selling the crystal and made a bad choice and ended killing himself. The crew believed in Milo and decided to stay beside Milo.

In a nutshell, the movie I related to the art movement post-modernism because of all the technology used such as the submarine named Ulysses which was racked by the robotic lobster-like creature named Leviathan, the machines which use the power of the crystal to power up and the power of the crystal. This is a movie filmed in the year 1914 which is not very modern century but the movie consists of such contraptions is remarkable.
