COLOUR by Kelvin Todd

The majority of people can see the colours in the surroundings. There is a sickness called ' colour blind ' which will cause the person to be unable to differentiate colours. Colours can be studied in different points of view. People can study colours in a scientific way through physics, chemistry, anthropology and psychology. People can also study colours in an artistic way through art and design. In Kevin Todd's studies, people sees the secondary quality of objects known as subjective. This is why every person sees colours differently. Kevin has conducted two major projects based on colours from a few countries. The name of the project is Chroma 256. These projects are conducted by a group of students from different schools. The students collect data and rearranged the colours according to the results given. The targets consist of children, the students themselves and senior citizens. The targets are given keywords to come up with matching colours. The children will have the brightest colours whereas the senior citizens will have dimmer colours. Colours do mean a lot in life.

Assignment 1

Assignment 1

Mono Minimalist Photography

After experiencing taking pictures with our mobile phones, Mr Martin told us to bring our DSLR camera to class. he taught us how to use the DSLR camera, settings such as how to adjust the ISO, shutter speed and focal length. We were required to use the manual mode to take pictures as we are required to learn how to adjust the settings to obtain a good picture. Here are my pictures that were taken using the DSLR camera.

This is the assignment that made me feel like I am a profession photographer. My camera was connected to the lighting device and with every shoot, the flash went off. This photoshoot session requires knowledge to know where to put the lightings and with the help of our lecturer, Mr Martin, I learnt and understood where to put the lighting to get the wanted effects into the pictures. I would also like to thank my model, Jane for helping me complete the pictures. These pictures are the outcome.

Exercise 2

Exercise 2

Mono Street Photography

Our next exercise was to learn how to adjust according to the change of daylight. This was challenging for me as I am still not used to the DSLR camera and how to adjust to the right settings yet. We took pictures around Taylor's campus mainly the commercial block. I have learnt that to use higher ISO is when I am indoors or at darker places. Usually, if we are taking pictures outside under the daylight the ISO is 100. These are the pictures I have taken during my trial try around campus.

Assignment 4

Portrait Photography

Assignment 2

Mono Street Photography

Our class was lucky to have a chance joining our seniors to Klang for a street photography session. I was very excited as I am not local Kuala Lumpur citizen but from Sabah. Since coming to Kuala Lumpur for further studies, I did not have many chances to go sight seeing. This is eye-opening for me. We are going to a part of Klang that is also known as "Little India". During the pictures taking session, it was quite hard for me as I am still new to the DSLR camera and how to adjust the settings according to the environment. Most of my pictures were too bright as commented by my lecturer Mr Martin. After learning from my mistake, I have retaken some pictures when I visited Malacca with my friends. All the pictures taken were all in monochrome as the assignment requited. A monochrome picture has a vintage feeling thus making the picture looks like it was from the olden days. As for the city itself, it may be old and a bit rundown but the scenery is worth taking pictures to keep as memories. The first 10 pictures were taken at Klang and the last 5 pictures were taken at Malacca.

This is the first exercise given by our lecturer Mr Martin. Our first exercise was to take minimalist pictures using our mobile phone. This is a new experience for me because I seldom take pictures. A minimalist picture is a picture that is taken very near the object. Sometimes the pictures taken are not recognisable as it is too closed up. These are my five pictures taken using iPhone SE.

Assignment 3

Assignment 3

Cafes Hopping Photography

This assignment was fun but money consuming. It was a great experience as I get to explore Kuala Lumpur and taste a lot of good food and drinks. I went on this trip with two others friends despite it started to rain halfway of the trip we still enjoyed it. We went to a lot of the hot spots that were review by lots of people. It was a blast as I get to explore more of Kuala Lumpur. The sad case is that going on this trip, my purse got slimmer but lucky for more of the rides we got them free of charged as there was a promotion going on. At the end of the day, we had fun and enjoyed ourselves. These are the pictures I took. the first 6 pictures are the food and the other 5 pictures are the interior design of different cafes.

Exercise 3

Exercise 3

Slow Shutter And Fast Shutter Photography

This exercise is quite interesting as it requires great skills and patience to complete it. For me, the slow shutter pictures are very hard for me to understand how to get the effect into the pictures. For slow shutter, the shutter speed is more than 1 second to get the wanted effect, but the problem is that the picture usually will be too bright at the end so the environment is also important. Next, the fast shutter pictures are more easy to get the wanted effect into the pictures. For fast shutter, the shutter speed is usually 1/1000 second and set the camera to take continues pictures. For both shutter speed, the brightness of the environment plays a big part. For this exercise, we were divided into groups of 4 to help each other complete this exercise. Here are the pictures we took, the first 2 pictures are the slow shutter and the other 3 pictures are the fast shutter.

Exercise 4

Exercise 4

Portrait Photography

For this exercise, we got try out the different devices that were laying around the photography lab. We learnt how to use different angles and lighting to take pictures with huge contrast and shadow. The different position of the lighting also affects the outcome of the pictures. On the day of the photoshoot, we had one of our classmate's friend, Gavin be our model of the day. Mr  Martin let us take pictures in a dark room only with the spotlights as the only source of light. The outcome of the pictures was fascinating as we do not get any chances to take this type of pictures with the help of the spotlight. Another session of a photoshoot is we get to connect to the lighting system just like a profession photographer would in a studio. The first 5 pictures are in a dark room with help of the spotlights and the other 5 pictures are the camera connected to the lighting device.

Assignment 5

Levitation Photography

Assignment 4

This is the last assignment given by Mr Martin. The theme for the assignment is very interesting and challenging as it requires a lot of editing skills and it is levitation. This is a new knowledge for me as I did not know how levitation was produced. The tools needed are a DSLR camera, a tripod, some stools or chairs and the most important is the model. The most important picture to take is the original picture of the scenery where the model was posting, without the original picture the levitation pictures will not be successfully produced. I was lucky enough, on the day of the shooting the sunlight was cooperating nicely. I also thank my friend for lending a hand to be my model of the day. I have done some sketches which consist action such as meditation, jumping down from a high spot, holding a paper crane, reading a book and facing a mirror. All the sketches are paired with a reference. Here are the sketches and references. Below the sketches are the outcome.
